For most families the passport is the reason for the whole project. The Dominica passport is a solid travel document with one clear gap, the United Kingdom, and one political risk, the Schengen visa waiver after 2028. Below are the facts as of October 2026, based on the BRIDGES passport index of 4 October 2026 and the CBIU FAQ.

The UK is the most common disappointment. It introduced visas for Dominica citizens in 2023, and this is the main difference from St Kitts, Grenada and Antigua. Dominica also has no E-2 investor treaty with the United States. If the UK or E-2 is central to your plan, look at the comparison guide.

Validity, renewal and dual citizenship

According to the CBIU, the passport is valid for up to ten years, and five years for children under 16. It can be renewed at the Passport and Immigration Department or through any Dominican consulate, with no need to travel and no Dominica address. Citizenship is for life and passes to children. Dominica allows dual citizenship, so you keep your current passport.

Taxes

The CBIU states that Dominica has no wealth, gift, inheritance, foreign income or capital gains tax. You pay personal income tax only if you become resident in Dominica. A second passport does not change your tax residence by itself: your current country decides how you are taxed.

What could change

The EU. On 25 June 2026 the European Commission wrote to Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis and St Lucia, asking them to wind down their investment citizenship programmes by 1 June 2028, under the revised visa suspension mechanism. If they do not, the Commission may propose suspending the visa waiver. As of October 2026 nothing has been suspended. The government acknowledged the new EU framework in the Budget Address of 4 August 2026.

The presence rule. The same budget announced that new citizens will have to spend at least 30 days in Dominica within five years. This does not affect travel, but plan the trip.

My view

I present the Dominica passport to families as a good second passport for Asia, Latin America and, for now, Europe, not as a ticket to the UK or the US. For clients who need long-term life in Europe, I suggest combining it with a European residence permit. More on travel rules in the BRIDGES visa-free article.
